The Birds are back!
November 28, 2018
The Birds, a Vancouver public art project, was installed shortly after the 2010 Winter Olymics. Created by Vancouver artist Myfanwy MacLeod. The piece was inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror film The Birds and the way sparrows have expanded their presence in North America since being introduced in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1851.
The sparrow statues were in need of a serious fix thanks to their unexpected use as playgrounds, according to Vancouver's manager of public art, Eric Fredericksen.
The statues are made out of a combination of foam, paint and a covering over a frame of metal and all the activity over the years has taken a toll and the coating has started to crack and let water in. They are now back from being repaired and are home in the plaza at Olympic Village for all to enjoy!
